How to play Yahtzee: rules and scoring

  • 5 dice
  • 13 boxes
  • 13 turns

Goal: Roll combinations with five dice to fill the 13 boxes on your score card and finish with the highest total.

Setup

  • A score card for each player.
  • Upper section: six boxes, Ones to Sixes.
  • Lower section: 3 of a Kind, 4 of a Kind, Full House, Small Straight, Large Straight, Yahtzee and Chance.

How to play

  1. On your turn, roll all five dice.
  2. Keep the ones you like and reroll the rest up to two more times.
  3. Then pick an empty box on your card and score it.
  4. If nothing fits, scratch a box and write 0.
  5. Each box can be used only once.

Scoring

  • Upper boxes: add up the dice showing that number (three 4s = 12).
  • 3 of a Kind, 4 of a Kind and Chance: the total of all five dice.
  • Full House (3 + 2 alike) is 25, Small Straight (4 in a row) 30.
  • Large Straight (5 in a row) is 40, Yahtzee (5 alike) 50.
  • Each extra Yahtzee, once the Yahtzee box holds 50, adds a 100 bonus.
  • Joker rule: an extra Yahtzee can go in Full House or a Straight for full points, once that number’s upper box is filled.
  • An upper section of 63 or more adds a 35-point bonus.

Winning

After 13 turns everyone’s card is full; the highest total wins.

Note

  • In the app you enter each player’s turn separately: pick the player, the box and the points.
  • The next player is suggested for you.

House rules

These are the rules tables argue about most. Agree on them before you start; you can turn them on or off when you set up the game.

Extra Yahtzee bonus (+100)

Roll another Yahtzee while your Yahtzee box holds 50 and you get a 100-point bonus, whichever box you fill that turn.

Joker rule

If the upper box for that number is already filled, an extra Yahtzee can go in Full House, Small Straight or Large Straight for full points.
